How to choose a hydraulic breaker for your excavator

Choosing the right hydraulic breaker is what separates an attachment that performs and lasts from one that breaks tools, overheats the circuit or simply does not hit hard enough. The key is not choosing the biggest possible breaker, but one that matches your excavator. Why getting the size right matters

An oversized breaker on a small machine demands more flow than the circuit can provide, loses impact frequency and strains the pump. An undersized breaker on a large machine works at its limit, overheats and shortens piston and bush life. The goal is for your excavator’s flow and pressure to fall within the breaker’s working range.

The 3 machine specifications you need

Before choosing, check your excavator’s technical data sheet (or ask us using the model) and note:

  • Operating weight (tonnes): the first filter and the starting point for the breaker class.
  • Auxiliary flow (l/min): the flow the machine sends to attachments. It must fall within the breaker’s range.
  • Working pressure (bar / kg⁄cm²): confirm that the circuit supplies the pressure the breaker requires.

The right tool for each material

The breaker is only half the solution: the tool determines performance. As a general guide:

  • Moil point: general use, penetrates rock and compact concrete well.
  • Chisel point (flat): ideal for trenches, cutting and layered material.
  • Blunt/button point: for very hard rock where impact fragmentation is the goal.

The tool diameter for each model is shown in the table (45 to 125 mm). Using the wrong tool wears bushes and reduces performance.

Common mistakes when choosing and using a breaker

  • Choosing by weight and forgetting flow: two machines in the same weight class can have different flows. Always check l/min.
  • Fitting a large breaker to a small machine: it strains the pump and affects stability; it does not create useful force.
  • Not greasing the tool: the main cause of premature bush and piston failure.
  • Forgetting wear-part maintenance: bushes, tie rods, seal kits and pistons significantly extend equipment life.

Which hydraulic breaker do I need for a 3-tonne excavator?

For a machine of around 3 tonnes, the GC-129 (1.2-3.0 t) or GC-165 (2.5-4.5 t) may fit, depending on the excavator’s auxiliary flow and the application. Check that your l/min falls within the model’s range.

How do I know the hydraulic flow my breaker needs?

Each breaker works within a flow range. Check your excavator’s auxiliary flow in its technical data and choose a breaker whose range includes that value. If flow is too low it hits weakly; if far too high, the circuit overheats.

How often should I grease the breaker tool?

As a general rule, every 2 hours of work, using breaker-specific grease, with the tool supported and pressed against the material. This is the action that best prevents premature bush and piston failure.

Can I fit a large breaker to a small excavator?

It is not recommended. An oversized breaker demands more flow, loses impact frequency, strains the pump and compromises stability. You do not gain useful force.
